This is Julia way before she played Elphaba in WICKED.  Listen to her amazing belting and phrasing.  I’m conducting as well.  Notice how great it is to have a full orchestra instead of the cr*p they’re trying to pawn off in half the shows on Broadway!

  2. Hey Seth, yes julia is amazing, is there any way of getting a hold of that recording of her singing that song?

  3. Seth:
I’ve attended the Gypsy of the Year and Bonnet and totally enjoyed your hosting of these AND I learned cool stuff from you. I am so happy to have discovered your blog. I will be a regular visitor. Your deconstructions will make me a more astute listener.

  4. I’ve been wondering about that key change for years! Not why it goes down instead of up, but why it doesn’t change at all in the movie version. No reason I can think of makes sense.
If could ask Babs one question, that’d be it. Incidentally, I read an interview with Johnny Mandel recently where he talks about how Streisand like to modulate down a semitone, and explained his technique for making it sound exciting.
