This is when James was rehearsing for a non-equity production of WEST SIDE STORY back in 1993. I’m obsessed with how great he sounds. AND how devastating the background vocals are at the beginning.

As a first soprano, I am always very envious of the lower ranges male voices can reach. This is one of the loveliest songs ever and James did a super job. He should do a cabaret act or something, seriously. Snaps for James and CUT on those background dudes. Gah.

In my head, I picture this entire scene with a one of those background vocalists being catty as James sings.
“Whatever with Miss Thang over there getting the role of Tony. I can totally out-sing him. Oh, my cue is coming up…”
*sung (if that’s what you can call it)*
“MARIA…” <– Epic fail.
Kudos to James on his rendition here!

Most devistating background vocals ever. They should be kicked. hard.
But James, he was excellent

AHAHA! I laughed out LOUD at the beginning, you’re so incredibly right about the background vocals. And about him sounding fabulous for the rest of the song.

I’m just catching up on all the past Seth online videos to help me settle down since I’ve had devastating news about 2 friends illnesses recently and needed to cheer up before trying to sleep (and Seth’s deconstructions really help!), and this one is so beautiful! I think this version of Maria is better and more beautifully sung than the one from the most recent B’way cast that I hear on SeriusXm On Broadway. So there.
