This is in response to a letter I got in my contact section.  She questions why I love vibrato.  I hope I make it clear with these examples…PLUS I got requests for GOING DOWN from HAIR sung by Gavin Creel after I claimed (by accident) in my Playbill column that I had a deconstruction on my site. Busted. Here is finally is!

  1. Seth i love watching you lip sync while you deconstruct.

i have a question. what if someone uses too much vibrato?
i know someone that every time there is a long note she uses a lot of vibrato. the stuff you point out is barely noticeable. what she does you can hear her change notes and it just doesn’t sound good.

  2. I love this! I saw that email in your ask me/tell me section and I was somewhat baffled. I love that you used Going Down as an example as it’s probably my favorite song from the Actor’s Fund CD.

  4. Seth you’re so right! The reason why it is more impressive than straight tone is that being able to control your vibrato (like Gavin Creel here) demonstrates that the singer has total control over their vocal instrument.
