  1. Hi Seth,
I enjoyed your deconstruction of the three Effies!

I was wondering if you can help me remember a bit of Dreamgirls trivia: back in 1982/3, I saw Dreamgirls in Los Angeles 8 1/2 times (ok, the “1/2″ was when I snuck in the theatre for Act II.)

In the Opening Act II Dreams Medley, there was this verse that Deena sung:

“American men, you are the top,
You’ll never come down, please, please, please don’t stop
American men though we may roam
We got it, we know we got the best at home”

then went back into the song.

The problem is that after all these years, although I can remember the words, I cannot remember WHERE they fit.

Your version of this song (to which I have listed to approximately 1.6 million times!) does not have this verse in it (as you know); nevertheless, are you familiar with verse?

I very much love — and miss — the Broadway version (hated the movie) and although I listen to your version often, I am, of course, quite partial to the LA cast’s voices: Jennifer Holliday (my queen), Linda Leilani Brown (love that nasal voice), Clinton Derricks (bumped into him at Barnes & Noble!).

Since I was age 16 (I’m 43 now), I have loved, sung, and enjoyed it. I really don’t know why I am so attached to it, but I am.

Lastly, if you know anyone who has any (bootleg) recording of the LA cast, I would pay, as it brings back such joyous memories.

Thank you for being the force to put the WHOLE show on CD!
